3. More about Google
This is a year old, but it’s still worth looking at to see what Google favors in its search
What happens when you Google yourself? Try it now. Pay attention to what is on the first page and what comes up first- Twitter? Facebook? YouTube? What else?
Potential employers, college admissions officers, first dates, and others are Googling you! While there is no magic digital eraser that can wipe away negative content online, you can minimize it by adding your own positive content. What YOU post online is in your control! You can’t control what others post but you can push it down Google’s search page by being smart about what you post online and how often.
Major takeaways to control your online image:
– Use your first and last name
– Maintain a positive presence on Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.
– Be aware of comments you post online anywhere that are under your real name and/or under a user name that can be easily traced back to you. For example, if you have a YouTube account under your name or a recognizable user name, the comments you leave on others’ videos will come up in a Google search.
– Maintain your own blog or website that has your entire name on it in several places. Update it frequently!
Remember, it’s just as bad to have little to no information come up about you in a Google search. It’s important to cultivate a positive online image by participating in social media and other online communities in addition to maintaining your own blog or website.
