Today’s goals:
- Finish updating your online portfolios
- Complete 3rd quarter survey
- Check favorite websites for responsiveness
Today’s featured website:
- http://designersblock.co/– Help with designer’s block (like writer’s block, but for designers!).
Quick thoughts from yesterday
- Every browser has a different default search engine and people that are doing internet searches for you might not be web-savvy. It’s important to periodically look at the different results for yourself that come up in Google (used in Chrome), Yahoo (used in Firefox), and Bing (used in Internet Explorer).
- Focus on what you can CONTROL– social media accounts (especially Twitter) and content created with your full name (YouTube videos, blog posts). Consider opening a Twitter account and posting thoughtful tweets occasionally. I also strongly suggest opening a free LinkedIn account. You can add your classes, projects and community service in addition to any jobs you have or have had. See a student example here.
- Add your first and last name to your portfolio page at the very top. Example: Jamaal Basile’s Web Design Portfolio. This will help make your online portfolio more “findable.”
Updating your online portfolio
- First, log into the class webpage here.
- Second, click on the link to your portfolio page and then click edit page from the top menu since you’re logged in: Andrew, Cameron, Curt, Gina, Gustavo, Jamaal, JJ, Lincoln, Mohammad, Pat, Racquel, Sam
- If you don’t remember your user name or password, see me.
- Post at least 3 things here- pick your best Harvest of the Month media and projects.
- For work that is not live online, post a screen shot. For example, if you like a page you created recently, open it in a browser, take a screen shot of it, and post it as an image. Make sure you have no other tabs open. Use Paint or Pixlr.com to edit your screen shot.
- For your Harvest of the Month media, post both the graphic and a link to where it is published live (here). It will look impressive to have your work live online!
- Some of you opted to have your work posted to our online directory. If you did, find your name here and include a link to your directory on your page (make sure it’s yours and not the general class one). It’s not too late if you don’t have work up here and want to; let me know.
- Don’t forget to post brief explanations about what your work is- see the student examples for a guide here, here, and here.
- Peer review: please check out others’ portfolio pages and make suggestions for improvement. Do you think they’ve chosen things that represent their best work? Are their explanations clear (and even there at all)? I will also be making suggestions.
3rd quarter survey and goal reflection
When you’re done…
- Go to 3 of your favorite websites.
- Make a note as to whether each one is responsive. If a site is responsive, note the differences in design at different screen sizes. Does the menu change? Does the layout change? What else changes?
- Please enter the information about these sites into this Google form. We will share as a group afterwards.
